Vector is all-too-plausible fiction at its terrifying best It's up to forensic pathologists Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery to stop them. Jason Culp is serviceable in propelling the neatly abridged action forward, aided in places by scene-setting music. The cabbie's Russian accent and Stapleton's decency and intelligence are more believable than some of the coincidences that make the story work. But in general this is an exciting listen, spiced with Cook's considerable medical knowledge.
From the undisputed master of the medical thriller comes Vector, a riveting thriller by Robin Cook that speculates about the horror of bioterrorism and a deadly virus. Read more Read less.
What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? But having seen others rather severely pan this novel, maybe our expectations were low. Surprise -- we liked it a lot! OK, maybe it was pure escapism, but we found it a welcome switch from the medico-suspense genre typical of Cook ala Sphinx, showing another side of Cook's dexterity and topical brilliance.

His "explanations" of various scientific mysteries at least bordered on possibility hey, this is fiction after all! We did think the ending was a bit abrupt; we might have voted 5 stars if he could have handled that a little better.
In fact, we'd argue the escape element near the end was virtually the only segment of the book with little or no plausibility. Anyhow, we enjoyed. It was almost as if Cook inserted two motley, ill-mannered rubes into the book after having written the rest of it. The last one-third of the book and some of the science almost make up for the novel's many flaws by reflecting on deeper themes, but it was too little, too late.

This book was most certainly NOT a medical thriller. It wasn't even close to any book Robin has ever written. With "Brain", I did find myself involved in the story but the central premise was somewhat to creepy for me and the book in general was a downer.
That is not to take anything away from the book because Brain is a book that likely anyone who is a fan of medical thrillers would enjoy. I was testing genres at the time. What's the problem with this file?
