Danby DPA100E1BDB 3-in-1 Functions
For portable air conditioners, 3-in-1 means you only need this one item to perform the function of three different appliances. These functions are the cooling, dehumidifying and fan modes which all can be run separately. When you buy this type of AC, you don’t need to buy an additional dehumidifier or fan. The result is that this saves you money in addition to saving valuable storage space.
Danby DPA100E1BDB Cooling Capacity
For cooling, the DPA100E1 is rated by Danby at 10,000 which the company says can cool rooms up to 450 ft². This coverage is higher than many other popular 10,000 BTU units. For instance, the Honeywell MN10CES is only rated for 350 ft² and Whynter ARC-10WB only comes in at 300 ft² max. (You can read our full reviews by clicking the links.)
If your room measures within 400-450 ft² range, we recommend you save the box and everything which comes in it. Therefore, if you find this model does not perform well for your needs, you can return it and get a larger model such as the Danby DPA120EBDB 12,000 BTU unit.
Danby DPA100E1BDB Temperature Range
The Danby DPA100E1 10,000 BTU unit has a temperature setting range of 64°F to 90°F. The low end of this range is not as low as other brands for this BTU capacity which can be set as low as 60°F.
This could because of the larger room size Danby rates this model. We don’t find this a big issue. But, if you love it cold, you may end up disappointed.
Danby DPA100E1BDB Dehumidifier
The dehumidifier extracts up to 65 pints of water from the air in your room every 24 hours. This is a big difference over the smaller DPA080UB1GBD model. But, you should expect better dehumidifier capabilities as the size of the air conditioner increase in terms of BTU capacity. The bigger the room the AC is rated for, the more air which needs to be conditioned. And therefore, the more water which needs to be extracted.
The water which is extracted from the air has to go somewhere. And with this unit, it collects inside a tank in the AC. As with all portable air conditioners, the cooling stops once the tank is full. This prevents water from leaking out onto the floor. When this occurs, you’ll need to drain the water. Therefore, this can become a frequent occurrence in high humidity regions.
One thing we don’t care for is that when the tank is full, the fan continues to run. Consequently, you may not notice the compressor has turned off until the room starts to become warmer.
Danby DPA100E1BDB Fan-only Mode
When needed, this unit can be used simply as a fan to move the air around. The documentation recommends removing the exhaust hose from the window while using the fan-only mode but it’s not clear why this is recommended. Even though this is a bit more work, you’ll most likely want the window open anyway to maximize the cross-breeze. Therefore, we don’t consider a huge negative.
One difference we noticed between this model and most other 10,000 BTU air conditioners is that the fan only supports 2 speeds – high and low. Most of the other models we looked at support 3 speeds. There’s a possibility this is a cost savings design which the company is passing on to you. But, this seems more like an oversight and it is something to consider.
Does the Danby DPA100E1BDB have an Auto-Evaporation feature?
An auto-evaporation feature is found on most of the top brands. But unfortunately, this Danby portable air conditioner does not include it.
With an auto-evaporation system, the AC will expel the water collected to the outside through the exhaust hose connected to the window kit. Therefore, you may never have to perform the task of draining the AC.
The aut0-evaporation system is a huge benefit for humid regions. The downside to the auto-evaporation feature is that it will cost you more money. But, if you can afford it, we highly recommend it.
How Noisy is the Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioner?
We searched all the online documentation, and the product manuals but could not find a definitive answer on the level of noise this unit puts out. Finally, we reached out to Danby’s customer service department for the answer and here’s what we found.
This unit produces noise level within the 51.5-52.4 dBA(decibels) range. For comparison, a typical conversation reaches the 60 dBA level. This means you’ll be able to hold a conversation without raising your voice.
We should note that this level is about as good as it gets for an air conditioner this size. Therefore, we consider this a huge positive.
Does the Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioner a single-hose design?
This model comes with a single-hose design. Compared to a similar dual-hose system, this unit will take longer to cool your room and, therefore, is less efficient.
Can I install the Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioner without help?
Single-hose air conditioners are known for their easy installation. Therefore, you should not need any help with the installation.
Note that this unit weighs about 59 lbs (pounds). So, we do recommend you get help if you need to carry the unit up or down any flights of stairs. Also, all portable air conditioners are heavy and, therefore, have this limitation.
The supplied window installation kit fits can only be reduced to 28 5/16th inches at a minimum. If this is still too large for your window, the documentation states the kit can be modified. Therefore, you will certainly need to be able to be a little bit handy to make the modification.
On the plus side, the window kit can extend to a little over 80 inches. Therefore, you can easily install this window kit in a sliding glass door opening. This is a feature not provided with other brands of portable air conditioners.
Power Cord and Exhaust Hose
Two things that really stand out are the lengths of both the power cord and the exhaust hose. The power cord is 6 feet long and the exhaust hose is nearly 5 feet. Both are longer than many other units have to offer. These lengths provide more flexibility in locating the ideal location for the air conditioner. Therefore, these features simplify installation.
Casters with Wheel Locks
When you need to move the unit, there’s no problem. Simply grab the built-in handles and push or pull to the spot needed. The air conditioner’s caster wheels will glide across the floor with ease. Therefore, therefore moving the AC around the same floor should pose no difficulty.
A small, but overlooked addition is the wheel locks. The reason we like this feature is that it will secure the AC in place once you have it installed in the perfect location. Consequently, if you have pets or children, you will appreciate this simple yet effective feature.
Is Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioner easy to use?
This model comes with a vibrant LED, visual display as well as a remote control. Both are easy to understand and use without the need to read pages upon pages of product manuals.
By using either the LED display or the remote control, you can set your ideal room temperature and timer, adjust fan speed, or even choose one of the three different modes. Therefore, you should not worry about having a steep learning curve to use this AC.
Is the Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioners Environmentally Friendly?
There’s no worrying about holes in the ozone layer since all the Danby models use the environmentally friendly, R410A refrigerant.
Although the single-hose design is not as efficient as dual-hose models, it does come with a programmable timer. This allows you to only run the AC when it’s needed. Less electricity, mean less stress on your local power plant and fewer carbon emissions. But the most important reason to utilize the timer is it will save you money.
What type of warranty does the Danby DPA100E1BDB Portable Air Conditioners have?
This model comes with a 1-year, non-transferable warranty. This warranty only covers the plastic parts for first 30 days. All other functional parts are covered for the full, 12 months. Other brands do offer better warranties for similar air conditioners. Therefore, this is a bit disappointing.
On a positive note, if you happen to live within 62 miles (100 Kilometers) of a qualified, Danby service center, they will provide free, in-home service during the warranty period.
The 10,000 comes in 2 color options – black or white. Each color represents a different model number so be careful when ordering one – the DPA100E1BDB version is black and the DPA100E1WDB is white.
The Danby DPA100E1BDB/DPA100E1WDB portable air conditioner includes some really nice features which you may not find on other models. These include the longer power cord and exhaust hose along with window kit which extends to fit sliding, glass door openings.
Additionally, the noise levels found on this model are very good. The range of 51.5 – 52.4 dBA meets or beats levels produced from competitor brands in the 10,000 BTUs capacity level.
The biggest disappointment we found was that there’s no auto-evaporation system. Therefore, it will require more maintenance when it’s humid. Although, if you don’t live in a naturally humid area, this does not concern you.
Another thing we didn’t like is that the fan keeps running when a full, water tank triggers the cooling action to stop. Therefore, if you’re not paying attention, you may not notice until you start to feel the heat. But, maybe we are just being overly critical.
Finally, and this may not apply to everyone, is that the lowest temperature setting is 64ºF. This did not bother us but if you like it cold, you may want to think twice.
Overall, this model provides great features and has few downsides.
