Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU 3-in-1 Functions

The 3-in-1 means that the unit provides three modes which can be used separately.  These modes are the air conditioner, the fan, and the dehumidifier.

This versatility saves you money by eliminating the need to buy different appliances. In addition, if you live in an apartment or small residence, you’ll appreciate not having to worry about the storage required for a fan and a dehumidifier and an air conditioner when they’re not in use.

Cooling Capacity

The Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU portable from is a capable air conditioning unit that works best in mid-size rooms. Although Haier states it can effectively spot cool rooms up to 450 ft.², many people with similar size ACs including this unit find it’s best for rooms less than the maximum rating.

In the right size room, it will perform great. But pushing it to the stated limits more often than not leads to disappointment. When determining the square footage of the room size for a portable air conditioner, you should also factor in the height of the ceiling. If your ceilings are higher than standard 8 feet, then this will affect the cooling performance of the unit.

Understanding these factors will help you make a better buying decision. And, consequently, provide the result you want from your AC.

Temperature Range Setting

The unit supports a cooling range of 61 – 89 °F. This can be set by either using the display on the unit or by using the remote control.

HPB08XCM Remote Control

Some people love it cold. And if you’re one of those people, this range will provide gratifying. (Assuming your Haier portable air conditioner is sized correctly.)

We found some other manufacturers don’t support temperatures this low. One example of this is the Danby DPA100E1BDB 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner which only can be set down to 64°F.

Dehumidifier Function

The dehumidifying capability of this Haier portable air conditioner is really amazing. At up to 80 pints every 24 hours, this unit will dry out your space in no time and keep it dry.

We’ve owned homes with basements that would flood occasionally. Looking back, we wish we had a dehumidifier with this type of drying capacity.

Does the Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU have an Auto-Evaporation feature?

There’s one feature on a portable air conditioner which is an absolute must in our opinion. Even if you have to pay a bit more to get it. This feature is an auto-evaporation system and all of the Haier models we reviewed include it.

So why do we love this feature so much? Well, this is because it simplifies your life. In almost all cases, the water vapor which the dehumidifier extracts from your room will be vented through the exhaust hose to the outside.

Why is the Auto-Evaporation Feature Important?

Without this system, the water would collect inside the unit. And then when the tank is full, you would have to manually drain it.

We’ve done this work before, and it can take a lot of time and is prone to water spills. Therefore, this system saves you time and aggravation.

For full disclosure, there are certain conditions which you may encounter that could cause the tank to fill up even with the auto-evaporation feature.

These conditions are if you live in a naturally high humidity area or if you encounter a period of high humidity. But, in both cases, the number of times you’ll need to perform this chore will be reduced compared to units without this feature.

Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU Fan-only Mode

This Haier portable air conditioner supports 3 different fan speeds which is fairly standard for most ACs. This is typically not something to worry about but some models we reviewed only support 2 speeds – the Danby portable air conditioner we mentioned above is one of them.

Is the Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Noisy?

Portable air conditioners are notorious for being loud. As in, talking-level loud (60 dBA). Therefore, if you’re a light sleeper finding a quiet, portable AC should be very important to you.

The Haier HPN10XCM air conditioner is about as quiet as you’ll find with a maximum rating of 49 dBA. Consequently, this model should be placed near or at the top of your purchasing list.

Does the Haier HPN10XCM come with a Filter?

All Haier portable air conditioners come with a washable filter. And better than that, access to the filter is extremely easy. This feature pops in and out of the back of the unit.

This is a great convenience since Haier recommends you clean the filter once a week while the unit is in use.

You could let this chore go longer but you’ll only be hurting yourself. A clean filter allows for optimum air flow and, consequently, your portable air conditioner to run at top performance.

As an added benefit, you’ll get a more efficient AC which will cost less costly to run.

One disappointment is the filter is not HEPA rated. Therefore, if you have allergies, don’t expect this filter to help with pollen or smaller dust particles.

Does the Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner use a Single-Hose design?

This Haier portable air conditioner is a single-hose design.

Can I install this AC without help?

Typical portable air conditioner installations are easy and this unit is no exception. All you really need to know is how to use a screwdriver. This is needed for securing the window kit inside the window opening.

The exhaust hose connects to both the unit and window kit without any screws. After that, simply plug the power cord into the nearest outlet.

If you have any trouble at all, Haier provides a number of helpful installation videos one of which you can see here:

Tips

  • If your Haier portable air conditioner was laying on its side, the company recommends to stand up the unit for a full 24 hours before turning it on. This will prevent damage by allowing all fluids to settle inside.
  • Reduce vibration and noise by placing the unit on a level spot.
  • Prevent obstructions such as curtains from blocking the air flow, vent or filter.

Window Kit

The window kit can fit openings from 20 inches up to 46 inches.  In addition, your window must be able to slide open a minimum of 5 inches, either horizontally or vertically.

Unfortunately, for openings wider than 46 inches, we weren’t able to find any information about an extension kit. Therefore, we don’t recommend this AC if you need the exhaust host to vent out of sliding glass doors.

Exhaust Hose

The exhaust hose is an accordion style hose. Therefore, you’ll be able to adjust it to the perfect length up to a maximum of 5 feet.

This hose is longer than many other models on the market provide. The length of the hose is one of the often overlooked features by manufacturers. This is because longer hoses provide versatility to where you install the unit as well as simplifies the installation.

Therefore, we consider this is a nice addition.

Power Cord

Also, really nice is the length of the power cord which is 6 feet long. This length is double that found on the Honeywell models we reviewed.

In our opinion, we consider this feature is extremely important. Just like the exhaust hose, a longer cord gives you more options as to where the AC can be installed. Therefore, we consider this another plus for the Haier line of portable air conditioners.

Casters and Handles

The Haier HPN10XCM comes with handles and castor wheels. The handles allow you so securely move the AC when needed.  And the casters glide easily so you won’t strain your back.

Is Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner easy to use?

Between the remote control and LED display, you’ll be able to quickly find the perfect temperature setting and fan speed.

The LED control panel is extremely intuitive. This means anyone can use these controls without needing to read through pages and pages of a manual. Using the control panel, you can turn the AC on and off, control the temperature, the fan speed, as well as the timer.

In the rare cases where the auto-evaporation system cannot keep up with the humidity levels, the LED display has an indicator light to tell you if the water tank must be emptied.  This is important since when the tank is full, the unit will stop cooling! This is standard safety feature on all portable ACs since you don’t water overflowing onto your floor.

Does this unit need routine maintenance?

Cleaning the Filter

As discussed above, you will need to clean the washable filter once per week as recommended by Haier for this product. Other manufacturers such as Honeywell recommend every two weeks so this is a little different.

The access to the filter is extremely convenient so performing this task should take less than a couple minutes. All you need to do to clean the filter is remove the dust.  This can be done with a vacuum or water. Make sure the unit is turned off before starting.

Haier recommends that you remove excess water from the filter if you clean the filter with water before putting it back in the unit. Other manufacturers recommend you completely dry the filter which is a probably a better recommendation. This will prevent water from needlessly being drawn into the AC.

Draining the water

With the Haier auto-evaporation system, you may never have to remove any water. But in high humidity areas, this system may not be able to keep up. In this case, the water collects inside the air conditioner.  If the water reaches a certain level, it will shut off and you’ll need to drain the water.

Although this is a bit of a chore and susceptible to spills, it is easy. To do this, place a shallow pan underneath the drain in the back and remove the plug.

Is the Haier HPN10XCM 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioners Environmentally Friendly?

All Haier portable air conditioners are environment-friendly. This is because Haier uses the R410-A refrigerant. Therefore, you’ll be able to sleep well at night knowing you’re not puncturing holes in the ozone layer.

Timer

The timer feature allows you to tell the AC when to automatically turn on or off. This is a very simple function where the only thing you’re setting is the number of hours to shut off or turn back on.

When it’s sweltering outside, the timer feature seems pretty useless. Why would you want to shut the AC off?

Actually, this a great energy saving feature which also means it’s a great money saving feature.

When you leave for work in the morning you can set the timer to turn the air conditioner on before you get home.  Since the unit is not running all day, you’re saving money.

And by the time you get home, your home is cool and comfortable again.

What else should I consider when purchasing a portable air conditioner?

There are two major mistakes people make when buying a portable air conditioner.

One mistake is settling for a unit which is too small. When you do this either the temperature or the dryness levels (or both) will never be reached. Therefore, you may save yourself money, but you probably will not be happy with the results.

The other mistake people make is buying a portable air conditioner which is too large. If too large, the unit won’t be able to remove the proper amount of moisture. Therefore, you will end up feeling cold and clammy.

The Haier HPN10XCM portable air conditioner is rated for rooms up to a maximum of 450 sq. ft.  Therefore, if the space you want to cool is either larger or smaller, you’ll need to review other air conditioners which are better rated for your space.

Haier HPN10XCM Warranty Information

The Haier portable air conditioner warranty is pretty standard. It provides you 1 year on both parts and labor for personal use. If you plan on renting this air conditioner or using it for commercial reasons, the warranty drops to 90 days.

Paying for an extended warranty will ease any concerns you have.

Color Options

The Haier HPN10XCM is only offered in a single color style – the black and silver you see above.

Verdict

Pros

  • Very quiet
  • Great dehumidifying functionality
  • Lengthy power cord and exhaust hose
  • Simply installation
  • Helpful documentation

Cons

  • No HEPA filter
  • Average warranty
  • Single color option

The pros and cons for this series of Haier portable air conditioners are pretty much all the same.

On the plus side, this Haier portable air conditioner provides great value for the price points we found online.  We liked almost all the features but at the top of the list was how quiet the unit runs.  Followed by the dehumidifying capacity and lengthy power cord. In addition, this model is very, highly rated by other consumers which is one the best gauges of quality.

The negatives for this model are all issues which we can live with.  Sure it would have been nice to have a HEPA filter but this would have increased the cost of the unit. In addition, the warranty is not the best we’ve seen but this can be remedied by purchasing an extended warranty.
