Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU 3-in-1 Functions

The 3-in-1 capabilities simply means you getting features of three different individual appliances in 1 unit.  These features are the air conditioner, the fan, and the dehumidifier.

These features and versatility save you money by eliminating the need to buy different appliances. In addition, if you live in an apartment or small residence, you’ll appreciate not having to store three different separate items – the fan, dehumidifier and an air conditioner – when you’re not using them.

Cooling Capacity

The Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU portable from is a capable air conditioning unit that works best in mid-size rooms. Haier states it can effectively cool rooms in the range or 450 – 550 ft². As with many other portable air conditioners we’ve review, people find themselves disappointed if using this AC in room approaching the high side of the range (550 ft²). Therefore, you should consider scaling up the BTUs if your space is approaching the maximum rating.

In the right size room, this portable air conditioner performs great. But you should note that when determining your room size for a portable air conditioner, you should factor in the height of the ceiling. If your ceilings are higher than standard 8 feet, then this will reduce the stated cooling performance of your AC unit.

Understanding these factors will help you choose the best Hair portable air conditioner. And, consequently, provide the result you expect from your air conditioner.

Temperature Range Setting

Some people love it cold. And if you’re one of those people, the temperature range provided by the Haier HPN12XCM will be gratifying.

The unit supports a cooling range of 61 – 89 °F. This can be set by either using the display on the unit or by using the remote control.

HPB08XCM Remote Control

We found some other manufacturers don’t support temperatures this low. One example of this is the Danby DPA120E1BDB 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner which only can be lowered to a minimum of 64°F.

Dehumidifier Function

The dehumidifying capability of this Haier portable air conditioner is really amazing. This portable air conditioner can remove up to 100 pints of water from the air in your home every 24 hours.

Your space will feel dryer in no time and, this AC will keep it dry. And a dry home will reduce the chances of mold and mildew growing where you don’t want it. Therefore, the dehumidifier function provides a healthier living space for you and your children.

Does the Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU have an Auto-Evaporation feature?

There’s one feature on a portable air conditioner which is an absolute must in our opinion. Even if you have to pay a more to get it. This feature is an auto-evaporation system.  And, all of the Haier portable air conditioners we’ve reviewed include it.

The reason why we love this feature so much is simple. This is because it saves you time and simplifies your life. With this Haier portable air conditioner, all the water extracted by the dehumidifier will be vented through the exhaust hose to the outside in almost all conditions.

Why is the Auto-Evaporation Feature Important?

Without the auto-evaporation system, the water would collect inside the unit.  Then you would need to periodically drain the tank to continue running the unit.

We’ve done this chore before. It can take a lot of time and can be prone to water spills. With the auto-evaporation system, these can be eliminated. Therefore, it saves you both time and aggravation of performing this chore.

For full disclosure, you may encounter certain conditions which could cause the tank to fill up even with this feature. And these are if you encounter a period of high humidity or live in an area which is naturally prone to higher humidity levels. But, in either case, the number of times you’ll need to empty the tank is greatly reduced if not eliminated.

Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU Fan-only Mode

The Haier HPN12XCM supports 3 different fan speeds which is a fairly standard feature for most portable air conditioners. This is not typically something we worry about but some models reviewed only support 2 speeds – the Danby portable air conditioner we mentioned above is one of them. Therefore, it just something you should be aware before making a purchase.

Is the Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Noisy?

Many portable air conditioners are just plain noisy and that’s bad. If you need to raise your voice to hold a conversation with the AC running you will quickly become annoyed and dissatisfied.

Typical conversations are conducted at around 60 dBA. In comparison, the Haier HPN12XCM has a max rating of 49 dBA. This is really good since its about as quiet as you can expect from a portable air conditioner. Consequently, this model should be placed near or at the top of your purchasing list, especially if you’re a light sleeper.

Does the Haier HPN12XCM come with a Filter?

All Haier portable air conditioners come with a washable mesh filter. The filter can be found at the back of the unit and removes dust and particles from the air. Consequently, the air coming out of the AC is healthier than the air entering.

removing filter

Haier recommends you clean the filter once a week while the unit is in use. Fortunately, the filter is easily accessible and just as easy to remove and re-install.

If you forget to clean the filter, then you’ll be reducing optimum air flow and reducing performance. This will ultimately reduce efficiency, costing you money. Therefore, you’ll only be hurting yourself and potentially damaging the unit.

One disappointment is the filter is not HEPA rated. Therefore, if you have allergies, don’t expect this filter to help with pollen or smaller dust particles.

Does the Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner use a Single-Hose design?

This Haier HPN12XCM is a single-hose portable air conditioner.

Can I install this AC without help?

Typical portable air conditioner installations are easy and the Haier HPN12XCM is no exception. To perform the installation, all you’ll need is a screwdriver. This is needed for securing the window kit inside the window opening.

If you’re not handy or not comfortable wielding any tools then any of your friends or family will be able to help out.

And if you have any trouble at all, Haier provides a number of helpful installation videos one of which you can see here:

Haier Portable Air Conditioner Installation Video

  • Reduce vibration and noise by placing the unit on a level spot.
  • Prevent obstructions such as curtains from blocking the air flow, vent or filter.
  • If your Haier portable air conditioner was laying on its side, the company recommends to stand up the unit for a full 24 hours before turning it on. This will prevent damage by allowing all fluids to settle inside.

Window Kit

The window kit can fit openings from 20 inches up to 46 inches.  In addition, your window must be able to slide open a minimum of 5 inches, either horizontally or vertically.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find any information about an extension kit in cases where the window is wider than 46 inches. Therefore, we don’t recommend this AC if you need to vent out through sliding glass doors.

Exhaust Hose

The exhaust hose is an accordion style hose. This allows you to adjust it for the perfect fit without crimping it up to a maximum of 5 feet. If the hose becomes crimped, the AC will not function properly.

The length of this hose is a bit longer than the hoses shipped by other manufacturers of portable air conditioners. We consider this as an often overlooked feature. This is because longer hoses provide versatility to where you can install the unit. In other words, longer hoses simplify the installation.

Therefore, we consider this is a nice addition by Haier.

Power Cord

Another nice addition by Haier is the length of the power cord which is 6 feet. This is double the length found on the Honeywell models we reviewed.

We consider this an extremely important feature. Just like the exhaust hose, a longer cord gives you more options as to where your portable air conditioner can be installed. Therefore, put this in the plus column for the Haier portable air conditioners.

Casters and Handles

The Haier HPN12XCM comes with handles and castor wheels. The casters glide easily on the floor so you won’t kill your back. And, the handles allow you so securely move the air conditioner when needed.

Is Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner easy to use?

Between LED display and the remote control, you’ll be up and running in no time.

The LED control panel is extremely intuitive. Anyone can use these controls without reading through pages and pages of a documentation. Although, we do recommend reviewing the manual. Using the control panel, you can turn the AC on and off, control the temperature, the fan speed, as well as the timer.

On the rear occasion when you need to empty the water tank, the LED display has an indicator light to tell alert you.  This is important since the AC will stop cooling when the tank is full. But this is a standard safety feature on all portable ACs. Consequently, by shutting off, water will not overflow onto your floor.

Does this unit need routine maintenance?

Cleaning the Filter

You will need to clean the filter once per week as discussed above. Other manufacturers such as Honeywell recommend cleaning the filter every two weeks so this is a little different.

Since the access to the filter is extremely convenient, this task should not take more than a couple minutes. To clean the filter either use water or a vacuum to remove the dust. Just make sure the unit is turned off before starting.

If you use water to clean the filter, Haier recommends that you remove excess water before reinstalling it. We recommend that you wait until the filter is completely dry. This prevents water from needlessly being drawn into the AC.

Draining the water

If you encounter long periods of high humidity, the water tank on the Haier HPN12XCM could become full. When this occurs, the unit will shut off. Therefore, you’ll need to drain the water to get the unit back up and running.

Although this should not be a frequent occurrence, it’s nice to know that performing this task is easy. To do this, you’ll need place a shallow pan underneath the drain plug in the back and then remove the plug. Ensure the plug is securely place back on after you’re complete. This will prevent any water leakage when the AC is running again.

Is the Haier HPN12XCM 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Environmentally-Friendly?

The HPN12XCM is very environmentally-friendly since Haier uses the R410-A refrigerant. Therefore, you’ll be able to sleep well at night knowing you’re not puncturing holes in the ozone layer.

When it’s sweltering outside, the timer feature seems pretty useless. Why would you want to shut the AC off?

But we consider the timer as a great, environmental-friendly feature. The timer gives you the ability to run the AC only when it’s needed most – when you’re home. If you’re out or at work, the timer allows you to set the AC to turn on before you get home.

For the time the AC is not running, you save on electricity. And less electricity means less stress on the local power plant. Consequently, you will have a smaller carbon footprint, and, therefore, will be helping the planet!

What else should I consider when purchasing a portable air conditioner?

We always like to point out that there are two major mistakes people make when buying a portable air conditioner.

One mistake people make is buying a portable air conditioner which is too large. When an air conditioner is too large, the unit won’t be able to remove the proper amount of moisture. Therefore, you will end up feeling cold and clammy.

The other mistake is settling for a unit which is too small. When you do this either the temperature or the dryness levels (or both) you hope for will never be reached. Therefore, you may save yourself money, but you probably will not be happy with the results.

The Haier HPN12XCM portable air conditioner is rated for rooms up to a maximum of 550 sq. ft.  If your space is either larger or smaller than this, you will, therefore, need to review air conditioners which are better rated for your space.

Haier HPN12XCM Warranty Information

The Haier HPN12XCM portable air conditioner warranty is pretty standard. It provides you 12 months for both parts and labor for personal use.

If you plan on using this AC for commercial reasons and/or to rent, the warranty drops to 90 days. If these terms concern you, you can always consider purchasing the extended warranty.

Color Options

The Haier HPN12XCM is only offered in a single color style – the black and silver you see above.

  • Very quiet
  • Great dehumidifying functionality
  • Lengthy power cord and exhaust hose
  • Simply installation
  • Helpful documentation

  • Window kit cannot extend to fit sliding glass doors
  • No HEPA filter
  • Average warranty
  • Single color option

The pros and cons for the Haier HPN12XCM portable air conditioner is basically the same as the other Haier models we’ve reviewed.

On the plus side, this Haier portable air conditioner provides great value for the prices we found online.  At the top of the list of features we loved was how quiet this model runs.  In addition, you’ll love the dehumidifying capacity and lengthy power cord. Also, user reviews are overwhelmingly positive for this model.

If you don’t need to install the portable air conditioner in sliding glass doors, then the negatives for this model are all issues which we think you can accept. It would have been nice to have a HEPA filter but this would have increased the cost of the unit and possibly added a recurring cost for new filters. Also, the warranty is not the best we’ve seen.

Overall, the Haier HPN12XCM provides great value for your cooling needs.
