Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU 3-in-1 Functions

The 3-in-1 means that the unit provides three modes which can be used separately.  These modes are the air conditioner, the fan, and the dehumidifier.

This versatility removes the need to buy three different appliances. This is so important if you’re living in small space where storage is at a premium. In addition, it saves you from having to buy different appliances saving you your hard-earned cash.

A stand-alone dehumidifier can set you back almost as much as the Haier HPB08XCM so it seems like a no-brainer to choose something with additional and useful functions.

Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Cooling Capacity

The Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU portable from is a capable air conditioning unit that works best in smaller rooms. Although the manufacturer suggests it can effectively spot cool rooms up to 350 ft.², several users have stated that it’s best used in rooms of 300 ft² or less.

In the right size room, it can perform admirably. But pushing it to the stated limits more often than not leads to disappointment. This is often the case when manufacturers overstate capability. Understanding this before you purchase can help you not only make a better decision but create a result that you can live with.

Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Temperature Range

The unit supports a cooling range of 61 – 89 °F which is set on the display or using the remote control. If you like it cold, then this model will work for you unless the size your room is approaching the maximum capacity of the unit. And, therefore, you should consider upgrading to the Haier HPN10XCM.

HPB08XCM Remote Control

Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Dehumidifier

The dehumidifying capability of this Haier portable air conditioner is really amazing. At up to 75 pints every 24 hours, this unit will dry out your space in no time and keep it dry.

Does the Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU have an Auto-Evaporation feature?

One of the great features of any portable air condition, in our opinion, is to have some type of auto-evaporative system. Even if you have to pay a bit more to get one. And none of the Haier models we reviewed will disappoint you in this category.

The water vapor collected from your room is vented to the outside. This happens through the 5-foot exhaust hose which is connected to the window kit.

The great thing about this system is that this feature saves you time and aggravation of having to empty a water tray every day or so. And with this Haier system, you may never have to empty the water.

Other models will collect the water internally and shut down if it gets too high. When this happens during the night, it’s just a miserable experience. You basically have 2 options. Get out of bed, and drain the water or ignore it have the bedroom heat. No thanks, I’ll pay up for the auto-evaporation system.

Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Fan-only Mode

Much like many top portable air conditioners, the fan supports 3 different speeds. Therefore, you’ll be able to find a comfortable air flow.

Is the Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Noisy?

Portable air conditioners are notorious for being loud. As in talking-level loud (60 dBA). Therefore, if you’re a light sleeper finding a quiet, portable air conditioner is very important.

Rated at maximum or 46 dBA, the Haier HPB08XCM air conditioner is about as quiet as you’ll find. Consequently, you should place this model near or at the top of your purchasing list.

Does the Haier HPB08XCM come with a Filter?

All Haier portable air conditioners come with a washable filter. But better than that, access to the filter is extremely easy. It slides in and out of the back of the unit similar to a lint catch on a dryer.

Haier recommends you clean the filter once a week while the unit is in use.  Therefore, we consider this convenience as extremely important.

You could let this chore go longer but you’ll only be hurting yourself. A clean filter allows the AC to run at top performance. Therefore, you’ll get a more efficient AC which is less costly to run.

One disappointment is the filter is not HEPA rated. So if you have allergies, don’t expect this filter to help with pollen or smaller dust particles.

Does the Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner use a Single-Hose design?

This Haier portable air conditioner is a single-hose design.

Can I install the Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner without help?

Typical portable AC installations are fairly easy and this unit is no exception.

The window kit is installed with nothing more than a screwdriver which you’ll need to buy separately. The hose connects to the unit and window kit without any screws. After that, simply plug the power cord into the nearest outlet.

If you have any trouble at all, Haier provides a number of helpful installation videos one of which you can see here:

Tips

  • If your Haier portable air conditioner was laying on its side, the company recommends to stand up the unit for a full 24 hours before turning it on. This will prevent damage by allowing all fluids to settle inside.
  • Reduce vibration and noise by placing the unit on a level spot.
  • Prevent obstructions such as curtains from blocking the air flow, vent or filter.

Window Kit

The window kit can fit openings from 20 inches up to 46 inches.  In addition, your window must be able to slide open a minimum of 5 inches, either horizontally or vertically.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find any information about an extension kit to fit window sizes greater than 46 inches.

Exhaust Hose

The exhaust hose is an accordion style hose. This means you can adjust it to the perfect length up to a maximum of 5 feet. This length is longer than many other models on the market. You’ll be surprised how just a little extra length can really ease the installation process. So we feel this is a nice addition.

Power Cord

Also, really nice is the length of the power cord which is 6 feet long. This length is double that found on the Honeywell models we reviewed.

In our opinion, this simple but often overlooked feature is extremely important. This is because it gives you the ability to reach an outlet which may not be located directly under the window.  Therefore, we’re very happy to see Haier address a shortcoming we see on many other models.

Casters and Handles

The Haier HPB08XCM comes with handles and castor wheels. Therefore, you can easily and safely move the air conditioner around your home.

Is Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner easy to use?

Nothing is worse than installing a new appliance only to realize you have no idea how to use it. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that with this unit.

The LED control panel is extremely intuitive. This means anyone can use these controls without needing to read through pages and pages of documents. Using the control panel, you can turn the AC on and off, control the temperature, the fan speed, as well as the timer.

In the rare cases where the auto-evaporation system cannot keep up with the humidity levels, the LED display has an indicator light to tell you if the water tank must be emptied.  This is important since when it is full, the unit will stop cooling! But don’t worry, this is standard safety feature on all portable ACs.

Does this unit need routine maintenance?

Cleaning the Filter

As discussed above, you will need to clean the washable filter once per week as recommended by Haier for this product. This differs from other manufacturers so such as Honeywell which recommends this type of maintenance every two weeks.

The access to the filter is extremely convenient so performing this task should take less than a couple minutes. All you need to do to clean the filter is remove the dust.  This can be done with a vacuum or water. Make sure the unit is turned off before starting.

Haier HPB08XCM Filter

When you use water to clean the filter, Haier recommends that you remove any excess water before putting the filter back in the unit. This is a bit different than recommendations from other top brands who suggest the filters be completely dry. We consider this second recommendation a better option. This will prevent water from needlessly being drawn into the AC.

Removing the water

With the Haier auto-evaporation system, you may never have to remove any water. But in high humidity areas, this system may not be able to keep up. In this case, the water collects inside the air conditioner.  If the water reaches a certain level, it will shut off and you’ll need to drain the water.

Fortunately, draining the water is easy. Place a shallow pan underneath the drain in the back and remove the plug.

Is the Haier HPB08XCM 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioners Environmentally Friendly?

All Haier portable air conditioners are very environment-friendly units. These all come with R410-A refrigerant so no need to worry about greenhouse gasses or ozone layers.

Timer

The timer feature allows you to tell the AC when to automatically turn on or off. This is a very simple function where the only thing you’re setting is the number of hours to shut off or turn back on.

When you’re hot and sweaty, the timer feature seems pretty useless. Why would you want to shut down something so cool and refreshing?

Actually, this a great energy saving device which also means it’s a great money saving feature. When you leave for work in the morning you can set the time to turn on an hour before you get home.  This way you have something to look forward when you get there – a cool comfortable home.

What else should I consider when purchasing a portable air conditioner?

The Haier HPB08XCM portable air conditioner is rated for rooms up to a maximum of 350 sq. ft.  If the space you want to cool is larger than this, you’ll absolutely need to consider purchasing a larger unit.

There are two major mistakes people make when buying a portable air conditioner.

One mistake is settling for a unit which is too small. You may save yourself money but you probably won’t reach the comfort levels you’re looking for and, therefore, you will be disappointed. This is because either the temperature or the dryness levels (or both) will never be reached.

The other mistake is buying a portable air conditioner which is too large. If too large, the unit won’t be able to remove the proper amount of moisture. Therefore, you will end up feeling cold and clammy.

Of course, you may live in a really dry area so this may not apply to you. But if the unit is too large for your space then the mistake you made is that you probably spent more money than required.

Haier HPB08XCM Warranty Information

The Haier portable air conditioner warranty is pretty standard. It provides you 1 year on both parts and labor for personal use. Please note that if you plan on renting the unit or using it for commercial reasons, the warranty drops to 90 days.

If you’re really worried, you can always pay for an extended warranty.

Color Options

The Haier HPB08XCM is only offered in a single color – white.

Verdict

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Great dehumidifying action
  • Lengthy power cord and exhaust hose
  • Simply installation
  • Helpful documentation

Cons

  • No HEPA filter
  • Average warranty
  • Single color option

The negatives for this model are all issues which we can live with.  Sure it would have been nice to have a HEPA filter but this would have increased the cost of the unit. In addition, the warranty is not the best we’ve seen but this can be remedied by purchasing an extended warranty.

On the plus side, this Haier portable air conditioner provides great value for the price points we found online.  We liked almost all the features but at the top of the list was how quiet the unit runs.  Followed by the dehumidifying capacity and lengthy power cord. In addition, this model is very, highly rated by other consumers which is one the best gauges of quality.
